Karen E. Lee, MD, MPH

Geriatrics & Family Medicine located in Tucson, AZ

Dr Lee works with a domestic, private lab which derives stem cells exclusively from the umbilical cord and placental (non-fetal) tissue of healthy C section pregnancies of patients 35 yrs old and younger. These ethically-derived stem cells are thus taken from the by-products of C-sections that would otherwise by discarded. Experienced family physician Karen Lee, MD, offers innovative treatments in-office at Tucson Family and Geriatric Medicine. This type of therapy helps chronic pain from injuries, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases. Stem cells can also be used as anti-aging treatments for increased energy and body rejuvenation. Stem Cell Therapy Q&A

What are PRP and stem cell injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is found naturally in your blood and contains growth factors that are important for stimulating the growth of new, healthy cells.

By injecting high concentrations of PRP into areas of tissue or joint damage, Dr. Lee addresses chronic pain and mobility issues from disease or injury.

Dr. Lee also uses stem cells extracted from prescreened (non-fetal) umbilical cord and placental tissue. Stem cells have a unique ability to regenerate into other types of cells, including bone, muscles, cartilage, and ligaments, to replace damaged cells.

What can I expect during PRP and stem cell injections?

In stem cell therapy, Dr. Lee injects donor stem cells into areas of pain and limited function. For PRP treatments, Dr. Lee extracts a sample of your blood and prepares it in a centrifuge, which quickly spins the material, separating PRP from other materials.

Dr. Lee injects the high concentration of PRP or stem cells into the area of injury following a custom treatment plan based on your needs.

Treatment is minimally invasive. You can expect to go home after your procedure without any limitations or downtime. Common side effects of treatment include minor redness and bruising in the injection site that resolves within a few days of treatment.

How long does it take to see results of PRP and stem cell injections?

Because it takes time for new cells to develop, you’ll begin to see a reduction in pain and an increase of mobility within four weeks of treatment. It can take as long as 12 weeks to see the maximum benefit of your therapy.

The biggest benefit of regenerative medicine is that treatment addresses the root cause of your pain and mobility issues by stimulating new, healthy cells.

Am I a good candidate for PRP and stem cell injections?

To find out if PRP or stem cell injections are the right treatment options for you, Dr. Lee performs a thorough evaluation of your health history and existing condition. She may initially recommend other treatments to address pain or limited mobility before trying PRP or stem cell therapy.
